Academic and non-fiction books bring their own design problems. Titles are long, there is usually a subtitle, sometimes an editor’s name as well as the author’s, and the spine of a 300-page book has to carry all of it legibly. Getting the typography right matters more here than finding the perfect image.
We design covers for Pretoria authors remotely. You brief us by email or WhatsApp, we send two concepts, and we refine your chosen direction through the included revisions.
Designing for Pretoria’s academic and faith-based books
With the University of Pretoria, UNISA and TUT in the city, many Pretoria covers we design are for published research, textbooks and study guides. These need a credible, uncluttered look that respects the conventions of the field.
Pretoria is also home to large congregations, and devotionals and teaching books for members are a big part of what we design. Bilingual titles, in English and Afrikaans for example, are common; we plan the layout so both languages sit comfortably on the front and spine.
