Printing a children's picture book: what to prepare
Children's books are printed in full colour on every page, so the files need more care than a novel. Ask your illustrator to supply artwork at 300 dpi at the final printed size, in CMYK, and to extend any background that runs to the edge of the page by 3 mm on each side (the bleed). Keep text at least 10 mm away from the trim so nothing important is cut off.
Picture books are usually 24 or 32 pages, because pages are printed and folded in groups of four. Thinner books are saddle stitched (stapled through the fold), which lets them open flat; thicker books are perfect bound with a printed spine.
Choose the size by the artwork: 15 × 15 cm suits first readers and board-book-style stories, 20 × 20 cm gives room for detailed scenes and more text, and 21 × 21 cm feels like a premium gift book. Print runs start at 100 copies, and we send a proof for approval before printing.
