How to Write a Book Acknowledgment

A book acknowledgment page is where the author thanks the people who helped make the book possible. It can include family, friends, editors, designers, mentors, researchers, spiritual leaders, interviewees, publishing teams and early readers. Unlike a dedication, which is usually short and focused on one person or group, an acknowledgment page can be broader and more detailed.

The acknowledgment page gives readers a glimpse into the support system behind the book. It also shows professionalism and gratitude. A book may carry one author's name on the cover, but most books are completed with help from several people.

Start with the people who were most directly involved. This may include your spouse, children, parents or close friends if they supported you during the writing process. Then thank professional contributors such as editors, proofreaders, cover designers, layout designers, illustrators or publishing consultants. If the book includes interviews or research, thank the people who contributed knowledge or stories.

A strong acknowledgment page can follow this order: personal support, professional support, project support and reader appreciation.

Example opening: "This book would not have been possible without the patience, prayers and encouragement of my family. Thank you for giving me the space to write and the courage to finish."

Professional thanks: "I am grateful to the editorial and design team who helped shape this manuscript into a finished book."

Closing: "To every reader who picks up this book, thank you for allowing these words into your life."

Most acknowledgment pages are between half a page and two pages. If the book has many contributors, it may be longer, but it should still be easy to read. Long acknowledgments can become tiring if they include too much detail about every relationship. Instead of writing ten sentences about one person, express the main gratitude clearly in two or three sentences.

A dedication is a short honouring statement. An acknowledgment is a fuller thank you section. A practical example: an author may dedicate the book to her late grandmother, then acknowledge her editor, husband, children, pastor and publishing team in the acknowledgment section. If you are unsure where to place a person, ask yourself whether you are dedicating the book to them or thanking them for their role in the process.

Avoid turning the acknowledgment page into a private speech that only close family can understand. Avoid inside jokes, emotional pressure, unresolved conflict or long explanations. Also avoid mentioning people without checking spelling. Names, titles and organisations should be correct. Be careful with sensitive stories — a simple line such as "Thank you for standing with me during the most difficult season of my life" is often enough.

The acknowledgment page should be final before typesetting begins. Adding or removing a full page after layout can affect page order, table of contents, chapter starts and final print files. This is especially important in books with strict page counts or designed front matter.
