Self publishing is the process of publishing a book independently instead of relying on a traditional publishing house to accept, produce and distribute it. This gives the author more control, but it also requires more planning.

Self publishing has opened the door for many writers who may never have received a traditional publishing contract. The best channel depends on the audience. A poetry book may sell well at events, while a business guide may sell through workshops and corporate networks.

Many authors who plan to sell publicly should consider an ISBN. In South Africa, ISBNs are issued by the National Library of South Africa, and the NLSA states that ISBNs are free for eligible South African applicants. The ISBN helps identify the book in publishing and library systems.

Self publishing is not a shortcut. It is a professional route that rewards preparation. The author must respect the reader by producing a book that is edited, designed and printed properly.
