Printing a self published book in South Africa is a serious step. It turns your manuscript from a private document into a physical product that readers can buy, hold, gift and keep. Because printing costs money, authors should avoid rushing into production before the book is properly edited, designed and prepared. A professional printed book needs more than a Word document.
Step 1: Finish and Edit the Manuscript
Before printing, the manuscript must be complete. Printing should not begin while chapters are still being added or rewritten. After the manuscript is complete, it should go through editing and proofreading. For example, an author may think the manuscript is finished because the story is complete, but an editor may still find repeated sections, inconsistent names, missing transitions or spelling errors. If those errors are only noticed after printing, every copy will carry the mistake.
Step 2: Typeset the Book Interior
Typesetting is the process of laying out the inside pages of the book. It includes margins, font choice, line spacing, chapter headings, page numbers, front matter and page breaks. A book that is not typeset properly can look like a school assignment instead of a professional publication. The interior must be exported as a print ready PDF. Printers usually cannot work from a rough Word file if the goal is professional book production.
Step 3: Design the Full Cover
A print cover must include the front cover, spine and back cover. The spine width depends on page count, paper type and binding. A cover made only for social media or Kindle may not be enough for printing. A relatable example is an author who sends only a front cover image and expects the printer to print a full book. The printer still needs a back cover and spine. Without these, the book cannot be produced properly as a finished paperback.
Step 4: Choose Book Size, Paper and Binding
Common book sizes include A5 and 6 x 9 inch formats. The best size depends on genre, page count and reader expectations. Poetry, memoirs, novels, Christian books and business books often work well in standard paperback sizes. Children's books may need a larger format, especially when illustrations are important. Paper choice also affects cost and feel. Black and white interiors are usually more affordable than colour interiors.
Step 5: Apply for an ISBN if Needed
An ISBN helps identify your book in publishing and book trade systems. In South Africa, ISBNs are issued by the National Library of South Africa. The NLSA says eligible South African authors and publishers can apply online and receive an ISBN free of charge. The ISBN should be added before the final cover and copyright page are completed.
Step 6: Print a Sample Where Possible
A sample copy allows the author to check the physical book before bulk production. This can help catch issues with margins, cover colour, spine alignment, paper feel and binding. A PDF proof is useful, but a physical sample gives a better sense of the final product.
Step 7: Plan Your Selling Price
Before printing, calculate your cost per copy and selling price. If your book costs too much to print, your profit margin may be too low. This is especially important for colour books, small print runs and books with many pages. Authors should consider launch sales, delivery costs, discounts and reseller margins.
