Children's book illustrations guide — how to brief an illustrator, maintain character consistency, plan colour printing costs and prepare for production.

Children's books are judged by more than words. The illustrations, colours, layout, paper and print quality all shape the reading experience. A child may connect with a character before understanding the full story. A parent may decide to buy the book because the cover looks warm, clear and age appropriate. This is why children's book production must be planned carefully from the beginning.
Many first time authors underestimate how much illustrations affect cost and production. A children's book may have fewer words than a novel, but it can require more design work because each page must balance text and image. If the book is printed in full colour, the printing cost will also be higher than a black and white interior.
Start With the Age Group
Before creating illustrations, define the age group. A picture book for toddlers is different from an early reader for children aged six to eight. Younger children need simpler language, bold visuals and fewer words per page. For example, a book for three year olds may use one sentence per spread with large illustrations. A book for seven year olds may include short paragraphs and smaller illustrations.
Create a Clear Illustration Brief
An illustration brief tells the illustrator what each page or scene needs to show. It may include character descriptions, setting, mood, colours, cultural details and important actions. Without a clear brief, illustrations can become inconsistent. A story about a little girl in Soweto visiting her grandmother needs cultural detail — the illustrator needs to know what the child looks like, what the grandmother's house feels like, and whether the mood is playful or emotional.
Keep Character Design Consistent
Children notice when a character changes from page to page. If the main character has short braids on page one, she should not suddenly have long straight hair on page five unless the story explains it. This is one reason authors should work with a structured illustration process. Character concepts should be approved before the illustrator completes every page.
Plan the Layout Early
In children's books, text and image must work together. The author should not write long paragraphs and expect them to fit anywhere. Layout planning helps decide where text will sit, which pages need full illustrations and where white space is needed for readability.
Understand Colour Printing Costs
Colour printing can be beautiful, but it affects the final cost. A 24 page full colour children's book will usually cost more to print than a black and white text book of the same page count. If a children's book costs too much to print, the author may have to sell it at a price that parents find too high. Plan page count, book size, paper and colour use carefully before production begins.
Prepare Images Correctly
Illustrations should be high resolution and prepared for print. Low quality images may look acceptable on a phone screen but print blurry or pixelated. Authors should avoid using screenshots, compressed images or artwork pulled from messaging apps. Final illustration files should be supplied in the correct format and size.
Print a Sample Before Bulk Production
A sample copy is especially important for children's books because colour, paper and binding affect the final result. The sample allows the author to check whether the illustrations print correctly, whether the text is readable and whether the book feels suitable for children.
